Dog Catchers.

I was reading Modern Day Redneck the other day and he was talking about calling animal control. It reminded me of an experience I had a few years back.
There had been two dogs running loose and chasing my chickens, I happened to catch them after a day or so and called Animal Control to come and get them. It was about 3:30 on a Friday. They explained that they got off at 4:00 and could not get them till Monday. I told them I did not want to keep, feed and water them all weekend but they insisted that was the best they could do.
I said no problem, would they please notify 'Dead Animal Pickup' to stop by Monday and pick them up. I hung up the phone.
Animal Control was there in 15 minutes.

  1. It's been my experience that they are much like the police, never there when you really need them, and show up only after something has happened.

  2. this is a little off-topic, but similar, and i wanted to share our experience. we had a mcmansion built on top of us back in the city - it was one of the reasons we bugged out as quickly as we did. anyway...it seemed to take forever for the builders to build it...and they built it during the spring. sure enough, a bunch of starlings nested in the unfinished roof. those starlings were there for 3 weeks! and then the builders came and roofed the starlings were still inside the house. we could hear the starling babies crying and watched adult starlings try and bust through the vinyl siding. jambaloney and i looked at each other, nodded, and then he went out and busted a piece of the siding to the roof. the adult starlings now had a way in to the babies. we called the Humane Society and within 3 hours a tiny, young woman came out - she had already contacted the owner of the mcmansion who she said would be showing up soon. he arrived with 3 of his big Middle Eastern friends and she took none of their loud and abrasive BS! she told the owner to get up in the roof and make entrances/exits in the four corners of the roof until all of the babies were big enough to leave. he was forced to do so or she was charging him. he did open up the four corners and gave her the siding company's name in order for them to be charged. we watched daily and it took about 2 weeks for all of the adults and baby birds to leave. we told the owner that we would pay to replace the few pieces of busted siding, but i think he was just embarrassed at that point. we also alerted him when all of the birds had left - we waited several days and didn't see any adults or heard any chirping. he left the roof open another week.

the Humane Society had a truck drive by the house once a day for almost 4 weeks. the truck stopped every day and an officer went and checked all 4 corners of the roof to make sure it was still opened. there are some people in the world who really care about their jobs, and do their best. i know that this is off-topic but i was very impressed with the various officers who came and checked on what other people might call "some stupid birds".

    your friend,

  3. I guess I am getting soft in my old age because calling the Animal control was not my first option but I wanted the owners to suffer and not the dogs. If I killed them outright, the owners would not have cared. Instead, the animal control ticketed the dog owners on several occasions and each time they fail to pay the fine. The County is issuing an arrest for the owners because they have failed to appear in court and handle this matter.
All this could have been avoided if only the people would have put their dogs away. I even offered material and labor to help build them a pen.
I have also now trapped three of their cats. They know I am doing it because they see me carrying the trap with their cats in it to the truck and drive off only to return with an empty trap.
I was hoping they would come over on my property and confront me but all they do is stare.

  4. We have had our run ins with neighbors who don't control their dogs after repeatedly calling them to come get their dog off our property, and especially after it took a chicken. To make a long story very short, after we filed a dog at large report (again) with the county sheriff, the owner was responsible for a couple of months and then got lazy. We shot their dog on our property. Some people think that since they live in the country they don't have to be responsible for their dogs. We live in open range, which means cattle, not canine.

    1. I have had to take more drastic measures in the past also. Each circumstance is different, I look at how the animals are cared for, how they are treated, past problems etc.

  5. Yeah, growing up in the country as a kid, animal control wasn't exactly on speed-dial if you know what I mean. Especially if the dogs are chasing chickens.
